Safe, cost-effectiveand eco-friendly

LNG – safe, clean and economical

Fuel oil and gas oil will soon be replaced by new fuels. Due to the serious environmental impact of “special waste disposal at sea”, they are expecting it to come to an end sooner rather than later. Alone the huge burdens on coastal China will lead to heavier restrictions in that area. Such restrictions are already in place on European and American seas – and in future they will be extended and tightened

LNG – short for liquefied natural gas – is quickly becoming the alternative of choice. The reason is twofold: firstly, the drastic reduction in emissions compared to fuel oil. Secondly, the LNG can be used as an alternative fuel already without any problems.

In principle, using gas as a fuel doesn’t cause additional requirements of modern combustion engines. For years now, road vehicles such as cars, buses and lorries have been fuelled by liquefied gas. As with these vehicles, there are two solutions in shipping: the use of pure gas on the one hand; on the other, conventional fuel – e.g. marine diesel – in combination with LPG.
All leading engine suppliers already offer a wide range of engines that are dual-fuel optimised.

As well as an engine optimised for gas combustion, the storage of fuel on board is an important aspect of the LNG power system. During LNG production, natural gas is liquefied at -162°C to reduce it to one six-hundredth of its initial volume. This allows one cubic metre of natural gas to be stored in a container the size of a 1.5 litre water bottle. It is transported in insulated tanks to the user. This requires LNG-optimised tanks on board. Different types of tank exist. Which type is most suitable depends on specific requirements.

The higher initial investment required for LNG is offset by a number of compelling advantages:

  • Considerable reduction in particulates emissions, sulphur, nitrous oxides, and CO2
  • Fulfilling the stricter emissions limits (SECA) guarantees operation in the affected areas, which will be extended in future
  • LNG motors are lower maintenance and quieter
  • LNG is cheaper than oil-based fuels, with a higher energy yield than fossil fuels

LNG ready – the right choice for newbuilds

For ships operating mostly outside the regulated zones, there is often no pressing economic need to invest in dual-fuel or single-fuel gas. Nevertheless, newbuilds are increasingly being designed so as to facilitate retrofitting of dual fuel – i.e. use of marine diesel and LNG. To allow this, special care and attention during the concept development and design phase are given to:

  • Type of LNG fuel tank, location and volume
  • Capture and discharge of boil-off gas
  • Design and positioning of the refuelling connectors
  • Piping for supplying engines with fuel gas
  • Alignment of the engine room
  • Requirements of the ventilation facility
  • Adjustment of the safety plans to suit gas-fuelled ships

TECHNOLOG supports UASC in building 17 mega-container ships

From the first design to delivery of the last unit, TECHNOLOG supported United Arabic Shipping Company (UASC) to assemble the world’s largest fleet of LNG-ready container ships. One of these was the UASC BARZAN. 400 metres long, and close to 50 metres wide, it is one of the largest ships in the world.

According to TECHNOLOG Director Hans-Jürgen Voigt, CO2 emissions per standard container will lie “considerably below that of 13,500 TEU container ships” that run on conventional motors and were produced as recently as three years ago. All 17 newbuilds, he says, are built with quick, cost-efficient LNG retrofitting in mind.

HHAPAG-LLOYD commissions TECHNOLOG to plan first-ever conversion of large container ship to LNG

TECHNOLOG has received an order from HAPAG-LLOYD to carry out the world’s first conversion of a large container ship to use liquified natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

The demanding and pioneering project that TECHNOLOG is assuming leadership of will set the standard for future conversions of this type in addition to being prepared and executed in a hitherto atypical constellation of a consortium of suppliers. The consortium will be made up of the main suppliers of the components needed for the conversion as well as the Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co., Ltd. repair yard in Shanghai. 

The SAJIR, a 15,000 TEU vessel, is already one of the most energy-efficient ships in the world. As the lead ship in a HAPAG-LLOYD class with 10 sister vessels, the SAJIR will now be converted into an “LNG demonstrator vessel” in order to showcase the potential that this alternative fuel holds for the international shipping industry.
